Bridgetown
Bridgetown is the capital city of Barbados. The town was initially referred to as Saint Michaels. The town is located on the South Western region of the island- along Carlisle Bay. The Greater Bridge town region is situated within the Saint Michael Parish. The locals often refer to Bridgetown as the ~city’ or the `Town’. Gantley Adams International Airport of Barbados is situated only 16 Km from the city center and has daily flights to major places in the world such as Canada, UK, USA and the Caribbean.
Purpose of the city
It acts as a major tourist attraction of the West Indies. It also acts as a cruise ships homeport of the Caribbean region, informatics, convention center and a financial center.
Housing utilities
Being an ancient town, Bridgetown was characterized by buildings that were above 100 years old. For example, in 1885 the post office, primary schools and the two hotels that existed wee owned were over a century old and many of these buildings still exist even at the moment. The land in the region was used as agricultural land. There was abundant production of nuts, fruits and dairy products. In 192, the discovery of gold made the city wealthy and the settlement increased tremendously in the town. More buildings including a police station were constructed.
Until the late 1970s, population was concentrated in the city center. The area surrounding the city was used for agricultural purposes. In the 1980s, the serene and picturesque landscape of the region offered aesthesia that attracted tourists. A lot of people were attracted to move to this rural town. This created a strong demand for residential area.
Since there was an agricultural downtown, many farmers holding the land along the town decided to sell the farms which were in turn split and given to the urban refugees. This demographic change had a strong impact on the town’s industry. The profound agricultural industry was converted into a strong demanding industry for tourism service and recreational sector.
Housing costs
The housing in the city center has remained high since there is still high demand in housing there. Housing in the outskirts of the town remains high since fast development of power lines, infrastructure and technology is attracting people back to the city center. The cost of the house in Bridgetown is greatly determined by its distance from the city center.
The cost of living is high in the region and real estate development is in high demand as the influx of urban refugees is creating higher demand for residential housing.
